East Cheshire Council needs your help
"The Council’s Licensing Enforcement Officer, Mrs Jackson, has carried out a number of visits to Poynton in order to try and locate this van and to confirm the details of the operator. To date, Mrs Jackson has not been able to locate the van and no further information has become available in response to the Licensing Section’s inquiries"
This is part of an e-mail sent to the whippy team from Tony Potts who describes himself as " Community Safety Manager" of East Cheshire.
They are in possession of the registration No R613 MVV with photographs of a rogue trader operating within their borough.
Tony Potts further claims that their Environmental Health Department and the Cheshire Constabulary, have also been unable to locate this vehicle or it's operator.
Now pardon me, but the councils licensing section, the environmental health officer(s) and the Cheshire Police cannot find a bright Red ice cream van that is chiming around Poynton on a daily basis, despite having the registration number and photographs??
Somebody is having a laugh here at the council taxpayers expense. There are approximately 9 of these unlicensed vehicles operating within East Cheshire, all avoiding the license fee (£3280) loss of revenue, further avoiding any hygiene checks required by law, and probably with no public liability insurance, and yet all of the above people/agencies (according to Mr Potts) are unable to locate these vehicles?
Mr Potts is probably not interested in bringing in this revenue, after all he will be paid by the council tax payer whether or not.
More importantly, what is a "Community Safety Manager" doing all day? If you Google ice cream man prosecuted, you will find lots of horror stories where they have been selling cigarettes to children and worse.!!CLICK HERE!!
These people stay off the radar for a reason, many of them will be claiming unemployment benefit, many will not be registered with the tax man.
How well do you know your ice cream man? What is his surname? Has he got a hygiene certificate and public liability insurance? Has he got a criminal record? Do you really care?

Poynton Whippy goes "International"
In a very busy week (because the sun came out) Poynton Whippy has also been granted a license for Stockport. After repeated requests from children in Hazel Grove and Bramhall, we are now delighted to service their area. Poynton will of course be the main focus of our service, but not all parents appreciate the ice cream van every day. honestly kids.
We were unable to make the high school today, but will be back tomorrow, weather permitting.
Check out two new "doggy friends" enjoying their whippy below. The little pup is from Bramhall and the larger doggy is from Hazelbadge. If you would like your pooch featured, bring them to the van for a photo of them enjoying their whippy - RRRRufffff

What a day!! Rain and breakdown
The sun was out all day - right up until the high school gates opened, then it lashed down. One or two pupils braved the rain for a whippy, but most ran for home. As soon as they had all gone, the sun came back out!!
For about an hour it was whippy as usual, and then the wheels came off - well not quite, but the whippy van had to be taken back to whippy hospital, in the whippy ambulance. The surgeons will "operate" tomorrow to transplant a new wheel bearing. All being well, we will be back today, if not, Thursday at the latest.

Poynton High School back today
The weather stayed dry and it was good to get back to routine (not sure all the kids agree) It is forecast mixed weather for the rest of the week. The whippy van will be about as long as it is dry.
The roadworks are causing some changes to the van schedule though, tending to stay between Park Lane and Dickens Lane early on to avoid traffic.
It is also getting dark earlier already, which means we will be finishing earlier. On the plus side, the Hot Dogs will be on in October.

Poynton Whippy closed for holidays
As my daughter is getting married this week I will be away until Monday 6th September (sorry boys and girls) you will have to rely on the unlicensed chap for the week - providing Cheshire East council don't "apprehend" him first.
May the sun shine all week before the schools return.

Cheshire Police contact Poynton Whippy
The police contacted us today and perhaps you can help? An unlicensed rogue trader has today (Saturday 28th August 2010) left the scene of an accident (a hit and run) at Beechfield Avenue in Wilmslow. Were you a witness?
The officer I spoke to was unable to give too much detail, however, they are looking for a Pink ice cream van with the 7 dwarfs on it. Perhaps it visits your street on a regular basis, or you know the driver.
If so, please contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000 and quote: incident No: 548 on the 28/8/10
Cheshire East council officer Mrs Nikki Cadman first promised to deal with unlicensed rogue traders on the 23rd of June 2010, and to date along with her enforcement colleague Allison Jackson and manager Tony Potts, all they appear to have done is stick their heads in the sand.
Stockport council act swiftly to deal with unlicensed traders, and a photograph of both the driver and the van have to be provided. Imagine how useful that would be to the Police when a situation like this arises. When will the Cheshire East council finally act? Are they waiting for a child to be run over for the driver to flee the scene?
I will gladly post any positive progress they report - but don't hold your breath.
To contact Cheshire East licensing if you see a suspicious ice cream trader e -mail to: Nikki Cadman

The great British weather
Funny old week weather wise. Made it to Poynton on Thursday but spent two hours under a tree waiting for the storm to pass. When it continued to bucket down, headed off to the Grove to meet king whippy for a coffee, again, waiting for the storm to pass. At last gave up and returned to depot - When - you guessed it - the sun came out. Took Friday off in disgust.
Back to Poynton Saturday and it was summer again.
Will be away Sunday, attending a morris dancing championship, all being well - back on Monday

East Cheshire Council promises crackdown
The newly formed East Cheshire Council have promised a crackdown on rogue traders, licensing and enforcement officers are to be joined with their Environmental Health colleagues in stamping out illegal traders who are operating with apparent impunity throughout the borough.
They have been working hard for several weeks now preparing their evidence.
It is in the public interest that all street traders are licensed, and they meet the minimum hygiene standards required by law.
Illegal street traders pose a risk to public health as they operate unchecked. They are also defrauding the public purse by avoiding the license fees paid by bona fide traders.

Ice cream jokes
A body was found in the back of an ice cream van, it was covered in hundreds and thousands, the police think he topped himself.
The ice cream man was away for six weeks, I was sad to see him "a wafer" so long.
What"s a chav"s favourite ice cream flavour? Mint.
"So I went down my local ice-cream shop, and said I want to buy an ice-cream'. He said Hundreds & thousands?' I said 'We'll start with one.' He said 'Knickerbocker glory?' I said 'I do get a certain amount of freedom in these trousers, yes.'

A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool. After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.
The waitress asked kindly, ‘Crushed nuts?’
‘No,’ he replied, ‘Arthritis.’

The family of a disabled youngster are making a final attempt to raise money for a life-changing operation.
Jakob Scott-Thomas suffers from spastic diplegia – a form of cerebral palsy which affects his legs and severely restricting his movement.
His family must raise £50,000 by the end of September to pay for an operation in the USA so he can walk properly again.
Despite a massive effort they remain stuck on £16,000.
The operation, which would take place in October, could be the five-year-old’s last chance as the older he gets the less likely it is to work.
A fun day is planned at Chester Road Playing Fields, Hazel Grove, on Saturday (July 31) from 11am to 5pm.
Mum Lara, 25, of Arnside Avenue, Hazel Grove, said: "This could be his last chance because if he misses out this time he would have to be assessed again and may not be eligible because he has grown too much.
"It is an awkward situation as we are so grateful for all the money that has been raised but it is stressful as we are constantly aware we need to raise more.
"I can’t remember the last time we had a normal family weekend where we weren’t trying to raise money. But knowing we can change our son’s life keeps us going. Jakob is a happy little boy but he knows what is going on"
Jakob, who attends Moorfield Primary, on Lyndhurst Avenue, also lives with his dad Chris and brothers Joshua, six, and Harry, one.
If enough money raised Jakob will undergo an operation to loosen the nerves in his legs at St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri.
So far it has a 100 per cent success rate there but is not funded by our NHS.
At the fun day there will be a bouncy castle, stalls, food, games including apple bobbing and hook a duck and a penalty shootout. Visitors can even take part in a space hopper race.
Organiser Alexis Welsh, said: "We are hoping the event will be a massive hit, it’s free to get in and nothing is too expensive once inside.
"There will be so much going on, something for toddlers and teenagers to adults."

July has been the busiest month ever
Over the last month the Poynton Whippy ice cream van has attended countless birthday parties, and supplied 120 children with cool whippy ice creams at the Lower Park primary "day at the beach".
On Saturday we attended Greave Primary school fun day in Romiley and were able to make a donation to the school funds.
From there we went straight to the Chadkirk festival. After that, we were able to make a flying visit to some of the residents of Poynton, keeping those Poynton Whippy ice creams flowing.
On Sunday we returned to the Chadkirk festival where we again served over 200 people. The two lads in the photo are regulars of Poynton Whippy, who enjoyed their favourite ice cream at the festival

Sadly, at the end of the day we had run out of stock so were unable to visit Poynton. weather permitting though, we will be back to Poynton throughout the school holidays keeping the children (and adults) supplied with their ice creams.

England draw again
The Poynton whippy flew around to serve as many customers as possible so he could go home and watch the match.
It was not the greatest game (again) but many children were happy to get their whippy. Apologies to any who were missed, and all being well, we will be out and about Saturday and Sunday.

Poynton Whippy Ice Cream
Started off the day at Bowerfield nursing home in Disley for their first anniversary. The residents, staff and guests all enjoyed their ice creams.
From there it was straight to Poynton high for the hungry, thirsty pupils at the end of a hard days study (we hope)
Finally the whippy van had a brisk trade around the homes of most residents and a brief visit to the Deva bowl skatepark.
It was a relief at 7pm when the engineer rang to service the whippy machine ready for the summer. The weather forecast for the Bank Holiday weekend is not too good at the moment so fingers crossed. The Whippy van will be out on Friday but Saturday may be cancelled if it is cold and raining as predicted.

For most of the day which meant the Poynton Whippy was very busy.
Next week will bring the first question for the chance to win a 99. We are just waiting for a photo. It is not easy to post questions on the internet, as most kids can google the answer on their mobile phones. This makes it quite challenging to keep you all on your toes.

Lower park primary children covered Mr Whippy in Ice cream
As Mr Whippy struggled with the demand of around 200 plus children at lunch time, the ice cream exploded and covered Mr Whippy much to the amusement of the staff and children who were close enough to witness it.
Not to be deterred we carried on regardless and eventually managed to serve the endless queue of children that stretched around the playing field.
Mr Coulson served Emily a special twin 99 and the Poynton Whippy team presented her with a certificate and 8 tokens for free ice cream.
All in all a fantastic day with thanks to the staff for their assistance, and all the children for their patience, not forgetting Emily and her team who made it all possible.

In the coming weeks we will be posting various quiz and challenges to the Poynton residents. There will be various ice cream treats for the winners. Keep watching!!
Thursday looks dry and bright
Poynton Whippy has started to put the new "Poynton whippy" signs on the van. It looks a lot better than the Blue Sky Ices, but it has been a nightmare removing them.
Friday should be an exciting day for the children at Lower Park primary, thanks to Emily who won the election to be Head for the day. Lets hope Mr Coulson behaves as a pupil, check out the full story here: - Lower Park Primary Election

As the whippy was getting ready for a busy day, the rain came down quite heavy. The team called in the whippy weatherman (chief whippycloud) and it was agreed to cancel today's outing.
Hope it's dry and bright tomorrow (Friday) so can get out and about for the Bank Holiday weekend.

ICE CREAM SINGS!
One day I had lunch with some friends. Jim, a short, balding golfer type about 80 years old, came along with them---all in all, a pleasant bunch.
When the menus were presented, we ordered salads, sandwiches, and soups, except for Jim who said, "Ice Cream, please. Two scoops.
I wasn't sure my ears heard right, and the others were aghast. "Along with heated apple pie," Jim added, completely unabashed.

I wasn't sure my ears heard right, and the others were aghast. "Along with heated apple pie," Jim added, completely unabashed.
We tried to act quite nonchalant, as if people did this all the time.. But when our orders were brought out, I didn't enjoy mine.I couldn't take my eyes off Jim as his pie a-la-mode went down. The other guys couldn't believe it. They ate their lunches silently and grinned. The next time I went out to eat, I called and invited Jim. I lunched on white meat tuna. He ordered a parfait.
I smiled. He asked if he amused me
I answered, "Yes, you do, but also you confuse me.
How come you order rich desserts, while I feel I must be sensible? He laughed and said "I'm tasting all that is Possible.
I try to eat the food I need, and do the things I should. But life's so short, my friend, I hate missing out on something good. This year I realized how old I was. (He grinned) I haven't been this old before."
"So, before I die, I've got to try those things that for years I had ignored.
I haven't smelled all the flowers yet. There are too many trout streams I haven't fished. There's more fudge sundaes to wolf down and kites to be flown overhead.
There are too many golf courses I haven't played. I've not laughed at all the jokes. I've missed a lot of sporting events and potato chips and cokes. I want to wade again in water and feel ocean spray on my face. I want to sit in a country church once more and thank God for His grace.
I want peanut butter every day spread on my morning toast. I want un-timed long distance calls to the folks I love the most.
I haven't cried at all the movies yet, or walked in the morning rain. I need to feel wind on my face. I want to be in love again. So, if I choose to have dessert, instead of having dinner, then should I die before night fall, I'd say I died a winner, because I missed out on nothing. I filled my heart's desire. I had that final chocolate mousse before my life expired.." With that, I called the waitress over.. "I've changed my mind, " I said. "I want what he is having, only add some more whipped cream!"
Live well, love much & laugh often - Be happy.
Be mindful that happiness isn't based on possessions, power, or prestige, but on relationships with people we like and respect. Remember that while money talks, ICE CREAM SINGS!

Very busy day in Poynton
After the usual crush at the high school, we visited most of Poynton, finishing off at the skatepark and the Bird estate.
The sun shone most of the evening, long may the sunshine smile on us all.
Friday will be a repeat day for Mr Whippy, close to the school at 4 - 5pm before crossing to the Vernon Rd area.
From there it will be the skatepark about 6.30 finishing off on the bird estate and Glastonbury (if it's not too late)
If you get missed we will be back on Saturday & Sunday

Whipped around Poynton today
We started off at the top end by Waterloo Road and worked our way down Dickens Lane and Vernon Rd. A quick trip to the skatepark before a flying visit to Glastonbury. From here Mr Whippy came across Ben Jeffreys who is hoping to be an MP. Mr Whippy quizzed him and his team about his policies regarding free Ice Cream for kids. His best reply was that if all the kids voted for him, he would treat them to a 99.
Was this just political spin?? Mr Whippy will be watching.

Dry and Sunny in Poynton today
Another steady day for Mr Whippy. Served several new customers and several repeat customers. It is really one of the great things about selling Ice Cream, meeting and chatting to customers.
The look of delight on a child's face when they see the ice cream van can turn your worst day into a great day. It is infectious upon the adults too.
Grumpy Grandad soon cheers up if he treats the kids at the van and often ends up being tempted into a purchase.
May the sun shine all summer!!

No Ice Cream War in Poynton
Several customers and residents have expressed concerns that Poynton Whippy will "push out" the long serving trader (Russ) so the Whippy team would like to reassure everyone this is not the case. (Especially as he has now gone to Australia) reportedly for six months.
There is enough trade in Poynton to support 2 ice cream vans. Also it is about choice, Russ sells hard Ice Cream, and although the Whippy van could carry this, untill and unless Russ decides to "hang up his cornets" we will not be selling hard Ice Cream.
A typical example came at weekend when Mr Whippy served two 99's to some children whilst mum wanted a hard Ice Cream. It was amicably agreed mum would wait for Russ who was due later that day.
You now have a "choice" it is a bit like having an Indian take away on Tuesday and a Chinese on Friday. We both stock different products and try to visit at different times and days of the week.
There will be some initial crossover when we are in the same locality at the same time, but hopefully that will improve throughout the summer.

Poynton Whippy Ice Cream
Today was the busiest day of the year so far for Mr Whippy in Poynton, visiting the skatepark at lunchtime and teatime making sure the kids had a fresh Whippy or a cool drink to keep their strength up. In between Mr Whippy managed to get round to most of the streets in Poynton. A lot of families had gone out for the day, but the ones that were in enjoyed their Whippy.
Stay safe and remember Poynton Whippy drivers have a current enhanced CRB check, the vans have full council hygiene certificates, the correct traders licenses and public liability insurance (not all Ice cream vans are the same)
If you are having a barbie or a party and "fancy a whippy" you can text most afternoons.

Mr Whippy serves Blair and Brown
Try to conjure up an image of Gordon Brown on the election campaign trail. I wager that many of you cannot. If you are a political anorak you might, just might, recall footage of an awkward looking Brown being dragged in front of the cameras by Tony Blair in the 2005 campaign, when he was handed an ice-cream purchased by the then Prime Minister from a Mr Whippy van.
Remember: everyone loves a whippy

Mr Whippy has been busy in Poynton today
Mr Whippy visited Woodford Rd, the Bird Estate and the skate park by the Station. Next it was on to Gloucester & Buckingham before visiting Copperfield and Vernon Rd areas. We then called at Waterloo & Coppice Rd areas a flying visit was made to the sports ground before whipping round Glastonbury. By now Mr Whippy was tired and most of the children were ready for bed so it was time to head off to the ice cream factory to stock up ready for tomorrow.
On Friday Mr Whippy will be starting off at the Adlington Industrial estate in time for the workers lunch break. From there he will be working his way round as much of Poynton as the daylight allows.

The History Of Ice Cream
So where did it all start?
Legend has all sorts of fanciful stories about Marco Polo bringing ice cream from China and Catherine de’ Medici introducing it to France and King Charles I having his own personal ice cream maker; all wonderful stories, but sadly there is not a scrap of historic evidence to back up any of these legends. Marco Polo didn’t introduce either ice cream or pasta to Europe and worse still, he probably never even went to China. Most of these myths seem to have been introduced by the Victorians. The earliest evidence of anything approaching ice cream being made was in China in the Tang period (A.D. 618-907). Buffalo, cows’ and goats’ milk was heated and allowed to ferment. This ‘yoghurt’ was then mixed with flour for thickening, camphor (yes camphor!) for flavour and ‘refrigerated’ before being served. King Tang of Shang had a staff of 2,271 people which included 94 ice-men.
The early methods of freezing food need some explanation. Freezing of foods was achieved by mixing salt with ice. Mixing salt with ice reduces the freezing point and it is quite easy to achieve temperatures lower than -14C. Just who discovered the process is unknown, but it was probably invented by the Chinese. It was written about in India in the 4th century, and the first technical description of ice making using various salts was by an Arab medical historian Ibn Abu Usaybi (A.D. 1230-1270).
But the process did not arrive in Europe until 1503, in Italy where it was considered a chemists party trick, using various acids, water and salts. However, it was not used for food until water ices (sorbets) appeared in the 1660s in Naples, Florence, Paris and Spain. Later in 1664 ices made with sweetened milk first appeared in Naples.
In this country Ice Cream was served at a banquet for the Feast of St. George at Windsor Castle in 1671. It was such a rare and exotic dish that only the guests on King Charles II’s table had ‘one plate of white strawberries and one plate of iced cream.’ All the other guests had to watch and marvel at what the Royal table were eating.
Such was the interest and demand for ice cream that wealthy people built ice houses on their estates. Ice, ‘farmed’ in winter from lakes, ponds and rivers was stored under straw and bark, until the summer when it was used for cooling drinks, making water ices and ‘iced creams’. The ice was of such a poor quality that it was never actually put in food, it was only ever used to chill and freeze food and drinks.
Ice cream making was a closely guarded secret and the knowledge of how to make it would have been a meal ticket for life, which is why the first recipe in English did not appear until 1718.
The technique of making a custard based ice cream using egg yolks started in France around the middle of the 18th century and this is the origin of custard based ice cream. The Americans had to wait until 1800 to get their first taste of ice cream.
In the 19th century, ice cream manufacture was simplified with the introduction of the ice cream machine in 1843 in both England and America. This consisted of a wooden bucket that was filled with ice and salt and had a handle which rotated. The central metal container, containing the ice cream was surrounded the salt and ice mixture. This churning produced ice cream with an even, smooth texture. Previously it was made in a pewter pot kept in a bucket of ice and salt and had to be regularly hand stirred and scraped from the side of the pewter pots with a ’spaddle’ which is a sort of miniature spade on a long handle.
The key factor in the manufacture of ice cream was ice. Where was it to come from? In the early 19th century importation of ice started from Norway, Canada and America, this made ice cream readily available to the general public in the UK. Ice was shipped into London and other major ports and taken in canal barges down the canals, to be stored in ice houses, from where it was sold to ice cream makers. This burgeoning ice cream industry, run mainly by Italians, started the influx of workers from southern Italy and the Ticino area of Switzerland to England.
In London they lived in the most appalling conditions in and around the Holborn area. The huge ice house pits built near Kings Cross by Carlo Gatti in the 1850s, where he stored the ice he shipped to England from Norway, are still there and have recently been opened to the public at The London Canal Museum.
The advent of mechanical refrigeration using electricity and gas, at the end of the last century, is what made the ice cream industry what it is today. No longer were huge quantities of ice necessary and it was now possible to transport and store ice cream. Previously ice cream had to be eaten within a few hours of it being made as it required too much ice to keep it frozen. Ice cream quickly became a mass market product and many of the old flavours became best sellers. It is an interesting point that most of the flavours heralded as ‘new inventions’ by the go-go chefs, can all be found in the history of ice cream.
What about the cone?
Most people think of the cone or cornet as the traditional way of eating ice cream and until recently it was claimed in the United States to be an American invention dating from the 1904 St Louis World Fair.
Our recent research has shown that the ice cream cone was an English invention. Although the cone itself can be traced back hundreds of years, the first recording of cones being used for serving ice cream was in 1888 in Mrs Marshall’s Cookery Book. Prior to that ice cream was either licked out of a small glass known as a penny lick or taken away wrapped in waxed paper referred to as a hokey pokey (hokey pokey is supposed to have come from the Italian ‘ecco un poco’ ‘here is a little’). An American government official said in 1969 that “The ice cream cone is the only ecologically sound package known. It is the perfect package.”
